MPSE Waives Dues in Solidarity with Striking Members
In a considerate move amidst ongoing strikes, the Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) organization has unanimously approved a dues waiver for its current year members. As a non-union, nonprofit collective, MPSE represents professional sound and music editors operating within the film, TV, and gaming industries.
MPSE's decision comes in direct response to the film and television production stoppages that have significantly affected below-the-line talent, including sound editors. The organization stated that the waiver is intended to support members currently out of work, quelling the stressful decision of maintaining membership under financial strain.
MPSE President Mark A. Lanza added his voice to the statement, emphasizing that the aim is to maintain active involvement in the organization. The waiver gives members access to educational seminars, Sound Advice webinars, and other sector-related events. Lanza stated that the objective is for members to continue to sharpen their skills so they can return to work as top-notch sound artists once the strikes are resolved.
Members of the MPSE who have yet to settle their 2023-24 membership dues will have those fees waived. Already paid dues will be credited for the following year. While the MPSE maintains a neutral stance on the strikes, the outfit expresses optimism for a swift and amenable resolution, which would allow everyone to get back to their beloved professions in the entertainment industry. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) will return to the bargaining table on Friday after being on strike since May 2nd, SAG-AFTRA following suit since July 14th.

And just like that, another corporate titan brings on the warm fuzzies! Although the MPSE might not have Labor Union inscribed in bold on its placard, it embodies the spirit of solidarity in a time where unity is more needed than a blockbuster sequel.
Listen, I’m steeped head-to-toe in this industry, and nothing warms my ink-filled heart more than to see a collective band together in support of their peers, being the life buoy in their stormy seas. MPSE waiving membership dues might appear a small ripple in a giant ocean, but it’s a ripple nonetheless, and it means a lot.
It also sends a message - raising a proverbial toast to the throng of sound artists. You might not be on the catwalk's glittery ramp or at the forefront of glamorous award photos - but you are seen, you are valued! In a metropolis where hearing your own voice amidst the chorus can be a trial, this roar from MPSE is resonating loud and clear.
The beauty of it all is that this isn't just a humanitarian token. By maintaining access to educational programs and ongoing sector-relevant learning, the collective keeps its members in the loop and in the know, ready to bring their 'A' game back to the tables once the strikes roll credits.
So, my hat’s off to you, MPSE. Here's hoping the bargaining table will soon become a banquet table, serving justice and fair deals on a silver platter. Oh, and yeah, bon appétit to the strikes - May you find your just desserts sooner than later!
