MPTF Pleas for Donations Amid Entertainment Industry Strikes
The Motion Picture & Television Fund (MPTF) has issued a heartfelt and urgent entreaty for donations to assist affected below-the-line crew members during the ongoing Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA strikes. MPTF's CEO, Bob Beitcher, states that these workers have become the neglected casualties during these strikes, with many risking the loss of their homes, vehicles, and ability to cover basic bills.
In an instructive open letter to the entertainment industry, Beitcher clarified the devastating impact of these strikes on the non-striking industry workforce, especially those working below-the-line. The MPTF has reportedly granted nearly a million dollars in financial assistance since the Writers Guild commenced its strike on May 2, closely followed by SAG-AFTRA on July 14. With no clear end in sight, demands for financial aid have been entering the MPTF six times quicker than the previous year.
The MPTF offers grants of $1,500 to qualifying industry workers to help them manage their bills, but the need is growing rapidly. Notably, out-of-work crew members make up 81% of recent aid requests, and constituted 92% of aid recipients through the MPTF's funds over the past 30 days.
Potentially signaling a light at the end of the tunnel, in the past week the WGA and management’s Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers have exchanged potential new contract proposals, which could eventually lead to the writers' strike ending. However, no invitations have been extended to SAG-AFTRA for discussions yet.
Now I invoke the old-world glam of Hollywood to grace my commentary, like a spotlight on a foggy noir set. This situation reminds me of a poignant classic film scene: the cinematic world in black-and-white, with the everyday heroes - our under-appreciated crew members - fading into the grayscale.
Hollywood - yes, the town so riddled with its own fair share of dramas, disputes, and 'dues ex machina.' Here, it's not just the glimmer of glamorous gowns or the punchy quotes from scripts that create magic. It's the hard work of these behind-the-scenes stars who build, light, shoot, and strike sets. They're the ones hustling the hardest, chauffeuring the light, curating the "scene," and ensuring, for the rest of us, a seamless dive into an alternative reality.
Listening to Beitcher's emotive open letter, you can almost see it, can't you? The salt of the earth workers, the ones clocking in extra hours on sets for our next streaming binge or anticipation-filled cinema outing. It's gut-wrenching to imagine these talents teetering on the brink of losing their life's foundations due to circumstances beyond their control.
The paradox of this tale is beautiful in its ugliness: where a world built on dreams reels under strikes and somber realities. I implore you, as Beitcher has so eloquently, to check in with your fellow Hollywood family, the unsung heroes who have, quite literally, set the stage for our industry to shine. It's time for a little less action and a lot more compassion in Tinseltown.
