Pho is a popular noodle dish in America that has become very popular with both locals and tourists. It was first brought over from Vietnam many years ago and now almost every restaurant offers it.

It is usually served cold as a starter or meal main course and comes with various toppings such as cucumber, bean sprouts, basil, roasted peanuts, fresh Chinese ginger, lime juice, and hot sauce.

Popular pho dishes

One of our favorite easy, vegetarian-friendly eats at Pho Hollywood is their Crispy Rice Bowl with Chinese Mushroom Sauce. What makes this dish unique is that they toast rice in hot oil to create crispy bits.

The mushrooms in the sauce also give it some flavor. The overall taste is very rich! This recipe is definitely not too complicated or time consuming to make.

In fact, you can start making the mushroom sauce while the rice cooks which will help keep the finished product fresh. You may want to use a separate pot to hold the liquid since the mixture will reduce as it sits. Just remember to whisk well before using the liquid in the bowl.

This delicious veggie-packed meal was created by Chef Daniel Chiang back when he owned his restaurant in West Los Angeles. He still offers it today at his new location along with several other popular vegetarian and vegan options.

Places to find pho

While not every city has its own version of pho, you will always be able to get it in America! Most major cities have at least one restaurant that does authentic Vietnamese food and is considered good pho by most people.

Pho is actually a kind of soup so even if they don’t use noodles as a toppling agent, what sauce and spices they use can help determine how well it tastes. Some popular additions include basil, mint, rice powder, lime juice, fresh peppers, chicken or beef broth, and garlic.

Many restaurants add MSG (monosodium glutamate) to give it more flavor but this is quite controversial and some say it is harmful. Check out our article about why eating meat may be bad for your health to see why!

Overall, though, like anything spicy or salty, too much of a taste bud stimulant makes your mouth watermore, which stimulates more saliva, creating a negative effect.

Making pho

When making pho, there are two major components that make up the broth- meat and rice noodles. The ratio of meat to noodle mixture in pho is always 1:1, so one piece meat per one cup noodle mix.

The first step in making pho soup is boiling water. Once this is done, you can begin adding other ingredients to taste! These include fresh herbs like basil or mint, hot pepper flakes, rice stick noodles, and if desired, oil or butter for richness.

At this stage, you have completed making what is called “pho stock”. This solid ingredient base can be used later in recipes or simply refrigerated and reheated as needed.

To add the meat to the pho, choose your protein (beef, chicken, pork, etc) and cook it down until almost completely dried out. Then, season with salt and black pepper and stir into the pho stock. Let sit for about ten minutes before using in the recipe.

Cooking time

When cooking pho, one of the first things to consider is how long it will take to cook. This can be tricky as there are so many factors!

First off, how thick are your noodles? Thin rice noodles will cook much faster than thicker wheat pasta like ziti or fusilli.

Then, what kind of broth you use in your soup can make a difference in how quickly it cooks. Broth that has less salt content will soak into the noodle slightly quicker, creating more flavor but making them taste salty later. Make sure to check out our tips here for better broth!

Another factor is whether or not you like your pho hot or cold. If you want it hotter, then you must have longer boiling times because it takes longer for the broth to melt down the noodles. If you prefer it colder, then you can drink fast!

General rules of thumb are to start with shorter boiling times and work your way up from there! That way you’ll find something that works for you.

Adding noodles

As we mentioned, pho is made of three main components; broth, meat, and noodle. Depending on what kind of pho you like, how many noodles you add into your soup can make a difference.

Pho broths come in two varieties: light or heavy. A light broth has less salt than a heavier one, which some people prefer due to their preference for more salty foods. Your choice of broth really depends on whether you like it very salty or not!

Many people also add rice to give the soup body. This is usually done after the addition of the vegetable stock, but either way works fine. If you want to avoid adding any watery ingredients, wait until later stages of making the pho.

Now that those basics have been covered, let’s talk about the most popular component of pho - the Vietnamese beef noodle. These are thinner than Chinese wheat noodles and almost taste sweet because they’re cooked with coconut milk.

Some say these noodles don’t hold up well when eating pho as they get soggy easily, however I personally love them.

Addressing the broth

When some people talk about pho, they usually focus more on whether or not there is chicken in it or if the meat tastes good. But what kind of broth we use to make our noodle soup is an important part of the pho experience.

The Broth

Pho typically uses salty broths that taste mostly of water with little flavor. Most of these are made from ingredients like soy sauce, sugar, salt, and/or liquid natural gas (yes, really).

But not all soups need to be this thin and salt-heavy! Almost every culture has their own style of rich brothy noodles, and most of them can be adapted into your personal recipe for pho.

Addressing the toppings

Now that you have your phở in its pure form, it is time to address one of our favorite things about this soup - the toppings!

Pho usually comes with fresh basil, rice noodles, bean sprouts, roasted peanuts, sriracha, cucumber, and pepper. All of these additions are totally okay to add to your pho as long as you do not overdo it.

The classic way to eat pho is starting by dipping the rice noodle into the broth, then adding whatever toppings you like before slurping down the whole thing.
