Polarized Glasses And How It Is Utilized In 3d Cinematography

When filming with professional grade equipment, it is often times difficult to find use for some of these tools. Many times, people will have them sitting idle at the studio or production house, so they can pick up where you left off if you run out of battery or fuel.

That’s why this article will be about how to make best use of your polarized glasses during filming!

There are many ways to utilize polarizing filters beyond just using them as an invisibility cloak (though that is fun to do too).

Types of polarized lenses

There are two main types of polarizing filters: neutral density (or color-balancing) filters and selective polarization filters.

A neutral density filter is one that cuts down the intensity of light slightly, which helps reduce exposure values and bring down overall brightness. This works well for filming during day time scenes as it creates more interesting shadows and shades. Daytime shooting requires enough natural light to be able to film so this makes sense.

For night shots, however, neutral density filters will burn out the lens quickly because there isn’t much light coming in from outside. For this reason, they cannot be used when filming at nighttime unless additional lighting is supplied or special treatments are done to use another type of filter.

A common example of a neutral density filter is one that goes over the lens to reduce the amount of ambient light that gets inside the camera. These are sometimes referred to as “sunscreen” filters because of this function. Sunblock was probably invented due to this!

The other type of filter we will look at here is a selective polarization filter. A selective polarization filter only allows a very specific range of colors to pass through, with all others being blocked.

This doesn’t affect the intensity of light, though - it just changes how it looks. With white clothing, for instance, you can see some reflections off the skin, but not much else.

When it comes to using polarized glasses in filmmaking, there are two main uses. The first is as an aesthetic element that adds depth to scenes. This includes adding glimmers or reflections off of objects, creating more interesting patterns on surfaces, and incorporating overall color contrast.

The second use is for practical purposes. Here, the polarizer filters out too much light from the source, leaving you with darker footage. You can then add exposure to make the material lighter than natural sunlight!

When it comes down to it, there are three major categories of polarization. These are neutral density (ND), circularly-polarizing filter (CP) and grid-patterned linear polarizer (LP).

One important use of polarizing filters is to reduce reflections off of glass or water surfaces. This is typically done before filming starts, as it is difficult to remove once things have dried up. Reducing these internal reflections can help focus the film on something other than looking through a mirror!

Filmmakers often times will rotate their camera around a subject or angle to make it look more interesting. This is called panning. When you run into this while shooting, there are usually some mirrors or windows where an internal reflection has been reduced with a polarizer.

Another way to use polarization is in color correction. Certain colors such as reds, oranges, and greens contain large amounts of unpolarized light. By adding a pol filter over them, those colors become less strong and intense. This neutralizes all the light that contains no wavelength parts that contribute to perception of shape and intensity, making it more balanced.

You may also add a dichroic filter onto certain lights for similar reasons. These types of filters let specific wavelengths pass through un-polarized, which gives a brighter tone to what light source it is placed next to.

Disadvantages of using polarized lenses

One disadvantage to using polarized glasses is that you will need to have an additional source to use for filming. If your current camera does not have built-in polarization, then you will need to purchase one either at a store or online.

Another disadvantage is cost. Since these lenses are more expensive than non-polarizing ones, it can become very expensive to run around with them constantly.

Lastly, there are times when people cannot use polarizers due to allergies or health conditions. This may be difficult if you are looking to do professional work.

Ways to check if your lenses are polarized

One of the first things you can do to determine whether or not your glasses are polarizing is by holding them up against light. If the lights around you look distorted, red/blue skewed, or dark, then they are!

Your body will automatically adjust to remove the distortion caused by the glass, but unfortunately it also creates more polarization. So, try wearing those glasses at night when there’s less light for it to react to.

Alternatively, you could take off your sunglasses and see what happens. Not only will it help identify if your own glasses are polarizing, it may give you some tips on how to reduce their effect as well.

Take down your lenses when using them

When you are filming with polarized glasses, it is very important to take down your lens(s) every few minutes! This is particularly important if you are wearing more than one pair of glasses as well as sunglasses, since you would have to take off both sets of glasses at some point during the movie.

Filmmakers will sometimes only use one type of polarized glass for aesthetic reasons. For example, they may choose not to wear their other set of eyewear while the film is being shot so that the effect is less noticeable. Or perhaps there isn’t enough natural light available, so they don’t need to use the second kind of polarizer.

However, because we now know how much polarization can affect what we see, it is essential to be consistent about removing those filters. Otherwise, your overall perception of color and contrast can shift due to the way the filter effects what you are seeing.

This could make for quite a jarring experience later when you try and re-evaluate the footage you have already recorded. So, even though it was maybe aesthetically pleasing at the time, it might no longer feel appropriate to view the material after having been exposed to different levels of polarization.

Use polarized sunglasses with your lenses

When using third-party apps to edit your photos, there is an option to use polarizing filters. These are normally either gray or dark green glasses that reduce reflections and emphasize depth of field.

The most common way to utilize this feature is by adding one filter across both eyes. However, you can also layer two different filters for even more unique looks!

By putting one filter over each eye, the effect shifts from reducing reflection to enhancing contrast. This is helpful when trying to focus on only one element in the picture while still being able to clearly see their surrounding area.

A polarized filter is an optical component that you can add to a lens to produce darker, sharper contrast. An example of this would be looking into the sun with sunglasses!

When there are no clouds or light sources beyond your lenses, it becomes very difficult to see what is being displayed onto the screen. This is why most people use glasses with polarizing covers - so they can watch TV or movie content without having to deal with poor quality images.

By adding a polarizer cover to only one side of the glass, we are able to create more contrast by filtering out half of the light that gets through. These filters are usually attached to the front element of the lens (the part that extends outside of the frame). Because they are typically flat, they can easily be placed on top of each other when needed.
