"Radical" Bags SAG-AFTRA Boost Ahead of Nationwide Release

A. Prentice

Eugenio Derbez's Mexican true-life drama "Radical" that was a breakout at Sundance Film Festival 2023, has acquired a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement to allow for publicity efforts prior to its nationwide release on October 20, according to Deadline. Often coveted, such agreements do not ensure actors' participation in PR campaigns but merely create the possibility amidst ongoing SAG-AFTRA strikes.

As a small, star-centered film aiming for notable box office records, "Radical" would greatly benefit from such publicity, and it is anticipated that Derbez will be promoting the movie, as indicated by sources.

The interim agreements from SAG-AFTRA have now been lent to other major titles such as Sofia Coppola’s "Priscilla," Michael Mann’s "Ferrari," set to premiere in Venice, and Christy Hall’s drama "Daddio," featuring Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn, which will appear in Toronto.

"Radical," an inspiring movie from writer-director Christopher Zalla, is set to debut in the U.S. and Mexico through Participant and TelevisaUnivision's Pantelion Films. The narrative is inspired by a 2013 Wired magazine article by Josh Davis, recounting the authentic tale of Sergio Juarez Correa (played by Derbez), a teacher in a disregarded town of Matamoros, Mexico. Correa experienced a mental collapse after realizing he wasn't making a meaningful impact on his students. His fortune changed after discovering a new teaching approach through a TED Talk, and he decided to apply it to his classroom, leading to transformative outcomes.

With actors like Daniel Haddad, Gilberto Barraza, Jennifer Trejo, Mia Fernanda Solis, and Danilo Guardiola joining Derbez, "Radical" is a production of Derbez’s production company 3PAS Studios. Derbez produced the film with partner Ben Odell and Davis, with executive producers Javier Williams, Josh Bearman, Avelino Rodriguez, and Patricia Sanchez.

And now, thoughts the famous Hollywood Dynamics prentice pensive:

One can't help but feel a sense of intrigue at this "Radical" idea. Ah, the intermingling of life, Art, and yes, the obligatory polymeric PR machine that keeps the Hollywood gears greased. The film’s journey, mirroring its protagonist's, invites audiences to explore transformation found in the most unsuspecting of places - a neglected town, a TED Talk perhaps and, let's not forget, the agreements of SAG-AFTRA, shaping the publicity landscape even amidst strikes.

The idea that a film like "Radical," ripe with the scent of authenticity and a sense of the raw human struggle, may carve its niche in the cinematic annals is, I daresay, a refreshing glimpse of the proverbial 'silver lining.' And the involvement of a comedian turned dramatic actor, Eugenio Derbez, adds a certain piquancy to the proceedings.

As Hollywood continues its delicate ballet with SAG-AFTRA, these interim agreements become crucial lifelines for stories begging to be told amidst strife, just like our true-life drama here.

One might say that this film, "Radical," has found itself in a reiterative storyline - the underdog finding a new way to triumph. How very strangely fitting. Tormented teacher turns to TED Talk, and troubled film turns to SAG-AFTRA. The 'self-rescue in the nick of time' motif we adore. It gives us hope, doesn't it? Like a well-tailored suit, that narrative never seems to go out of style.

Let's raise our metaphorical popcorn and sip our projected buttered soda, as we await the October debut of the film, "Radical." With star-studded support and a narrative that promises profound results, it looks like we're in for quite an act in the ongoing drama of the entertainment industry. Till then, Hollywood, keep those wheels spinning and those cameras rolling.
