SAG-AFTRA, AMPTP Clash Over AI Rights: An Unending Showdown in Hollywood
Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the National Executive Director and chief negotiator for SAG-AFTRA, the actors’ union, is reported to remain in conflict with AMPTP over their Artificial Intelligence (AI) proposal, a disagreement made public at Disney studios during a studio day one strike tour with SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher. Despite AMPTP's earlier statement, describing their AI concept as "groundbreaking," Crabtree-Ireland claims the offer is unfairly biased against background performers.
The rift concerns performers signing over the rights to their name, image, and likeness without appropriate compensation or say in future uses; a move Crabtree-Ireland refutes. The chief negotiator stated that the union does not reject AI usage but insists on it being applied in ways that uphold actors' rights to their image and persona.
AMPTP responded, citing that their proposed AI model protects performers' digital likenesses, requiring consent for any creation or use of digital replicas. In spite of this, Crabtree-Ireland rebuffed the proposal amidst a major strike, arguing that background actors deserve fair compensation and a say in the utilization of their scanned images.
Regarding the strike's financial repercussions on the studios and streamers, the chief negotiator emphasized their concern over immediate impact, particularly relating to summer blockbuster promotions.
Crabtree-Ireland also highlighted the importance of consumers, encouraging them to show solidarity by considering the ethical practices of content providers. He underscored the growing importance of labor solidarity and warned of potential communication strategies, such as picketing in various cities where streaming HQs exist.
In the AMPTP contract talks, some actors have expressed anxiety concerning the streamers' habit of pulling movies and series from their OTT services. Crabtree-Ireland maintains that the focus is rather on sharing the revenue of these streaming platforms instead of concentrating on specific productions.
Despite the standstill, AMPTP has made no moves to return to negotiations since their last talk.

Now let's dust off the film reels, shall we?
It's a veritable showdown at the Hollywood Corral between our gunslinging representative of theunions, Crabtree-Ireland, and the eerie AI apparitions of AMPTP. The stage is set, and instead of tumbleweeds, we're watching AI proposals blowing in the wind.
Crabtree-Ireland, channeling the spirit of Hollywood's iron-willed protagonists, stands tall for actors' rights, ensuring that no actor, big or small, is left scriptless and discarded like some old popcorn bag. Ah, the drama, the suspense, the palpable tension! All we need now is an intermission, am I right?
Putting the dramatics aside, it’s important to acknowledge the power dynamics at play here. We must tip our hat to Crabtree-Ireland's concerns about digital likeness. We, the audience, love showbiz, but we love showbiz because of the people, those who bring stories to life, not just their digital doppelgangers.
The way I see it, the storyline isn’t who moseys back to negotiations first, but who rides off into the sunset knowing that they played fair. That’s a classic Hollywood ending I can get behind.
So, will AMPTP come bearing the white flag and meet halfway? Or, will the laws of Old Hollywood prevail, where the bold and the brave fight for what they truly deserve? We can only wait to see where this thrilling plot takes us, dear readers. Break a leg, everyone!
