SAG-AFTRA Calls off NYC Pickets Amid Heatwave and Strikes
Keeping it cool amidst rising tensions between the SAG-AFTRA and big-name studios, picket lines in New York City are notably absent for the next couple of days. According to a tweet disseminated in the late afternoon by the actors' guild: "Stay safe, stay cool, stay #SAGAFTRAstrong."
Originally, Thursday and Friday were set to feature picket lines outside multiple studio sites across Manhattan--including, but not limited to, HBO/Amazon, Warner Bros. Discovery/Netflix HQ, Paramount, and NBCUniversal. However, with the approaching thunderstorms and temperatures anticipated to hit the mid-90s, SAG-AFTRA decided to pull the pickets for safety reasons.
This decision follows a previous occasion where the actors held firm against heavy downpours during an animation-themed picket in Manhattan, refusing to let the weather hinder their cause.
Currently, SAG-AFTRA is in the midst of their 13th day striking against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, with the end as elusive as ever. Parallel to their cause, the Writers Guild strike against the studios is reaching its 86th day, pointing to growing unrest amidst the entertainment industry.
Beneath the sweltering heat and intermittent thunderstorms, it's clear these aren't the only currents stirring the atmosphere. With tensions reaching fever pitch amidst strikes and counters, it's like a daytime soap opera unfolding right in the heart of Hollywood.
Now, for as much as we appreciate the dramatic flair (through a glass screen, of course), it's a welcome distillation of this sizzling tension as the guild takes a step back and prioritizes the safety of its members. After all, picketing beneath a scorching sun has more in common with an endurance test on Survivor than a productive protest for labor rights.
And speaking of Survivor, an appropriate reference seeing as the pawns in this game are a danger of dropping like flies in this heat. Note to self and strikes alike: let’s choose climatically favorable circumstances for our discontent. This isn't Emperor Nero watching Rome burn; it's Nero streaming it on HBO Max.
While the heatwave strikes the streets of Manhattan, so too does a wave of striking writers and actors, reminding Hollywood and all involved that in this tale of labor rights and studio execs, there is, as yet, no conclusion.
So, as the storm continues to brew, with writers, actors, and studio execs locked in a treacherous dance amidst heatwaves and possible thunderstorms, we anxiously await the next twist of this Hollywood saga. In the meantime, stay cool, stay hydrated, and most importantly, stay engaged - because this plot is far from over.
