SAG-AFTRA Chief Warns of AI Threat to Hollywood
The head of the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) has warned about the potential misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on Hollywood. SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher singled out Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI), capable of both writing scripts and rendering actor images digitally, according to the guild's most recent strike podcast. The misuse of GAI, in crafting 'deep fakes' of actors, has become a crucial strike issue for both the Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA.
In a conversation with Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the guild's national executive director, and Ben Whitehair, executive vice president, Drescher labeled the issue a "deadly cocktail" of "Wall Street, greed, technology, and whizz kids". She stressed the need for "barricades", adding that strict safety and communication regulations must be in place to protect artists' rights. These rights, she emphasized, encompass likeness, gestures, acting, and voices, which she sees as being threatened by AI.
"This is not a way to cut us out of our livelihood," Drescher mused, "It's not a way to dehumanize this industry, even though it could do both if we are not careful, because we are dealing with people that don't think, don't care, and are really very greedy.”
Concerns regarding GAI misuse and a demand for regulations extend beyond Drescher's office. Duncan Crabtree-Ireland supported this sentiment, pointing out that companies should be willing to accept reasonable proposals surrounding AI usage, such as informed consent and fair compensation.
Drescher also took aim at studio CEOs, whom she believes to be "megalomaniacs" and "tone deaf" to the needs of actors. She referred to the guild’s aim for a larger percentage of the streaming profits and hinted at a potential new residuals formula for streaming shows.
Now, let's take a step back and pop the popcorn, Hollywood is once again putting on the ultimate drama, this time with an AI twist.
At the heart of this captivating tale are actors taking a stand, not against dastardly villains or nefarious regimes but AI, the unseen specter slowly seeping into their once sacrosanct domain. It's a genuine plot twist many in the industry didn't see coming.
"Generative Artificial Intelligence as a scriptwriter!" I hear the Writers Guild chorus in disbelief. Let's remember folks, it was not long ago that the humble typewriter was the author's weapon of choice, before the dawn of the revolutionary word processor. Now the threat is software coding, not nib scratching, while the old quill wonders where the world is heading.
While Drescher and Co. paint a disturbing image of AI playing puppet master with our beloved celebrities, there is a Dickensian ring to the 'Compensate and Consent' chant that echoes through the guild’s corridors. Ah, amidst the silicon and synapses of technology, the glorious human element still thrives. Informed consent and fear of talent commodification are now part of Hollywood's new script: an unforeseen sequel to the digital revolution's initial fanfare.
In another scene, Drescher critiques the 'megalomaniac' studio CEOs. I can’t help but chuckle at the visual of megalomaniac studio bosses and AI gangsters battling for control in a boardroom-turned-battlefield - a cinematic masterstroke anyone? Hitchcock and Spielberg would be thrilled.
However, can the mogul's ostensible deafness cause rapid acceleration towards an industry AI takeover? Drescher's dystopian warnings are more than cautionary tales; they're valid explorations into the industry's future. Effectively, they serve as an alarm bell for the entertainment industry to wake up, review its contracts, and perhaps send a gently-worded memo to its robotic inhabitants.
Still, amidst this unnerving narrative is an underlying determination. This is not the chronicle of Hollywood's surrender to AI wizards but a call to arms. Drescher's hopes of a strike-induced 'sea change' underpin a defiant subplot rather familiar to Hollywood: the good guys don't go down without a fight.
So as our beloved industry navigates this fascinating plot twist, let's all sit back, keep our popcorn close and see who, in the end, takes the last bow. Megalomaniac tycoons or humble pixels - stay tuned to find out.
