SAG-AFTRA Greenlights 39 Indie Productions Amid Ongoing Strike
SAG-AFTRA, the influential actors' union, has provided approval for 39 independent film and television projects to continue production despite the ongoing strike action. The union confirmed that these projects, including two from the independent entertainment company A24, have no current affiliations with companies that are members of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), a prerequisite for the waiver.
Two films by A24, "Mother Mary" and "Death of a Unicorn", are among the productions that have been granted this approval. However, inside sources reveal that receiving an approval does not signify an immediate start to filming. While "Mother Mary" seems to be nearing its production phase, "Death of a Unicorn" is reportedly still in the more exploratory stages of development.
A multitude of other artistic endeavors have also received the green light. These include "Rivals of Amziah King" starring Matthew McConaughey, "Dust Bunny" featuring Sigourney Weaver and Mads Mikkelsen, and "Bride Hard" with Rebel Wilson in the leading role.
These particular approvals are being granted to "truly independent producers" that have demonstrably no ties to AMPTP and further agree to be retroactively bound to whatever agreement terms are reached with the AMPTP once the strike concludes.
Now, cue Addison Prentice with a bit of commentary.
Well, isn't that a breath of fresh air in an otherwise murky strike landscape? Despite the disturbing cloud of labor disputes, creativity finds a way to bask in the sunlight. Independent producers and studios, like students scurrying away from bullies in the schoolyard, are finding their own paths and creating refuge for their artistic expression.
The case of A24 is particularly worth noting. Already known for marching to their own beat (and with a knack for picking winners - they've got an Oscar or two to show for it), they find themselves in the fortunate circumstance of having two films get the nod. Yet we find ourselves in the all too familiar Hollywood holding pattern wondering when the director will finally get to shout, "Action!"
Likewise, it's heartening to see projects such as "Dust Bunny" and "Bride Hard" receiving waivers. After all, who doesn't want to see Sigourney Weaver flex her acting chops once again, or Rebel Wilson charm us with her unique brand of humor?
Of course, the strike is still an ongoing issue, with the cinematic community holding its breath with every waiver announcement. Yet, amidst all the chaos, it seems to be business as usual for those "truly independent producers." But, as the rest of us wait with bated breath for a resolution, let's not forget to support the cinematic outliers who are keeping the silver screen dream alive, one waiver at a time. Sometimes, it takes a bit of pushing the envelope (and a not-so-small dose of tenacity) to create a masterpiece.
