SAG-AFTRA Greenlights Shyamalan's 'The Watchers' Amid Strike

A. Prentice

In a breakthrough for the film industry during an ongoing strike, union SAG-AFTRA has granted a new set of movies the green light, with Ishana Night Shyamalan's 'The Watchers' and the Sam Raimi-produced 'Don't Move' capturing interest. These names are part of an updated list of approved projects.

New Line acquired distribution rights for 'The Watchers', featuring Dakota Fanning. But it’s not the big studio alignment that tipped the approving scale for SAG-AFTRA. The film, a negative pickup, was still in the pre-deal stage of its distribution contract, earmarking it as an indie film with independent financing - a defining condition for the waiver approval. The studio’s involvement in the project is pending and will only transpire once the strike is resolved.

Adding to its unique waiver qualifications, 'The Watchers' is considered a local UK shoot; it had been shot in Ireland and aligned with the British Equity Guild's provisions. This allowed it to sustain production during the strike, sharing the stage with productions like 'House of the Dragon.'

Directed by Ishana Night Shyamalan, M. Night Shyamalan's daughter, "The Watchers" marks her initial directorial venture. Georgina Campbell also graces the cast in a starring role.

Besides 'The Watchers' and 'Don't Move', other projects earning waivers include Isaac, Sight Unseen, the Untitled Rebuilding Project, and Mother, May I? As SAG-AFTRA unveiled Tuesday, 39 films are now set to start rolling the cameras. This list incorporates two A24 films, Mother Mary and Death of Unicorn, and the faith-based series, The Chosen.

The waivers are solely given to "truly independent producers", only as long as they are unassociated with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers and consent to be retrospectively tied to the contract terms settled with the AMPTP after the strike conclusion. This is the updated report on the projects given a thumbs-up from SAG-AFTRA for waiver approval.

And now, let's peer behind the silver screen and spill some tea about these incredibly "indie-pendent" projects that have rather miraculously squeezed through the strike's ironclad gate.

Ah, the enchanting world of movie waivers, where a quick signature can turn a potential boundary into a window of opportunity. It's quite the official nod and fairy godmother wave that makes 'The Watchers' such an interesting spectacle. Speaking of spectacles, who doesn’t relish an underdog story of a film-manoeuvring -strike-evading success?

Then there's the cherry on top. A Shyamalan leading the helm. Ishana Night Shyamalan, to be exact. Now isn't that a plot twist? Channeling dynastic energy, she's set to make her directorial debut - a potential narrative as riveting off-camera as 'The Watchers' promises on screen. It's the sort of Hollywood lineage that might even elicit an anticipatory "Oscar buzz" whisper down the grapevine...

But of course, we're just really here for the waivers. As the ink dries on this new batch of indie approvals, let's take a moment to appreciate this dramatic subplot to the looming strike story. Striving to stay above the fray, the spotlight hits the "truly independent producers," individuals delicately dancing on the sidelines of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.

Let us stand by with our popcorn, all eager audience members huddled in the dark, curious about where the shimmering spotlight of moviemaking will turn next. As the waiver windows are flung open wider, we might just catch a tantalising wind of the unfolding Hollywood narratives. Because isn't that why we're here? For the stories within the stories, the nested narratives of Hollywood that continue to draw us into its thrilling escapades.
