SAG-AFTRA Strike Derails Hall H at Comic-Con: Dune, Monsterverse Scuppered
San Diego Comic-Con's prestigious Hall H will be noticeably absent of Legendary's anticipated presentation, originally set for two Saturdays from now. The studio had planned to showcase their upcoming projects, Dune: Part Two and the latest Monsterverse film. However, the SAG-AFTRA strike has put a halt to the event. Similarly, popular sitcom Abbott Elementary's Comic-Con panel, initially scheduled for the same Saturday, has also been canceled.
Jury Duty, The Wheel of Time, and Gen V are among other shows that have bowed out of their scheduled events due to the strike. In line with this, Dune: Part Two's panel was initially set for 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 22, circumstantial to there being no SAG-AFTRA work stoppage. The cancellation is unfortunate, as the potential appearance of actors Zendaya, Timothée Chalamet, and Florence Pugh would have sparked much-needed excitement for the convention.
Dune: Part Two, the sequel to the multi-Oscar-winning blockbuster by Denis Villeneuve, is set to be released on November 3 by Warner Bros. In the film, Paul Atreides, played by Chalamet, teams up with Zendaya's character Chani and her Fremen desert tribe in a quest for revenge against those who ruined his family.
TV networks had been prepping and bracing for a SAG-AFTRA strike in their Comic-Con programming, and those planning to attend the convention in San Diego as well. FX is among those still planning to showcase episodes and clips of shows like the soon-to-conclude Archer.
Despite these cancellations, Paramount plans to uphold its Hall H exclusive preview of its August-release tentpole, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, on July 20, at 11:30 a.m.
Finally, Comic-Con has been contacted about the further impact of the SAG-AFTRA strike on the conference. More updates on potential cancellations will be provided when they become available.
Alright, who needs a "Jurassic Park" amber cane when you have the SAG-AFTRA strike to trap us all in its impact radius, huh? It seems the mighty T-Rex of this strike has taken a hefty chomp out of Comic-Con, and by the looks of it, Hall H seems to be its favorite cut.
Dune: Part Two playing coy with the "to be or not to be" at Comic-Con line was always riding the waves of the potential strike. But putting Zendaya, Chalamet, and Pugh playing hooky is about as disheartening as watching the last slice of pizza get swiped at a party.
It's like being promised a roller coaster ride, only to find out it's shut down for maintenance. That's what the SAG-AFTRA strike is to entertainment zealots right now: a hefty gavel banging on to the heart of joyous anticipation - adjourned!
Yet in the midst of all this, it's gallantly amusing to see Paramount holding the fort with their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. It's as if in the middle of a movie-set hurricane, they're just shrugging it off, yelling, "Cowabunga, dude!" into the storm.
At the end of the day, in classic Hollywood style, the show must go on, even if some of the main acts are stuck in the dressing room exchanging heated words with the union. Uncertainty may be the second act of Comic-Con this year, but it's worth sticking around for the third. After all, it's Hollywood - and no strike has ever managed to keep the curtains closed for good.
