SAG-AFTRA Strike Knocks Out Legendary's Comic-Con Presentation

A. Prentice

San Diego Comic-Con attendees have been dealt a blow, as Legendary studio has cancelled its much-anticipated Hall H presentation. Scheduled two Saturdays from now, the presentation was set to showcase Dune: Part Two and the studio’s next Monsterverse movie. The cancelling of the event is in response to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.

Adding to the list of recent cancelations is the Abbott Elementary Comic-Con panel which was slated to take place this coming Saturday. Other projects that have willingly pulled out their participation in the schedule comprise Jury Duty, The Wheel of Time and Gen V.

Expected at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 22, Dune: Part Two's panel was always contingent on the absence of a SAG-AFTRA work stoppage. High anticipation surrounded the potential appearance of Zendaya, Timothée Chalamet, and Florence Pugh, aimed to add some vibrant flurry to an already condensed and sleepy fanboy gathering, significantly affected by the concurrent WGA strike. Memory of the Denis Villeneuve sequel to the mega blockbuster Dune: Part One's presence at CinemaCon back in April lingers, where the first trailer was unveiled.

Warner Bros. is set to release Dune: Part Two on November 3 with Chalamet’s Paul Atreides partnering up with Zendaya's Chani and her Fremen desert tribe to seek revenge against the villains who devastated his family.

Whilst, TV networks and Comic-Con participating groups in San Diego have been planning and preparing for the SAG-AFTRA strike, plans to showcase series, episodes and clips such as FX's soon-to-wrap Archer remains on schedule.

In spite of the recent string of cancellations, Paramount is still on track to present its Hall H exclusive sneak peek at its August scheduled tentpole Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, on July 20 at 11:30 a.m.

Comic-Con was contacted by Deadline regarding the influence of the SAG-AFTRA strike on the convention's programming. Updates will be provided in case of further cancellations.

But now, allow me to ascend my industry walnut podium and dust off my lectern for some classic Addison-style commentary.

Comic-Con's analogy as the Super Bowl of geek culture isn't without its fair share of fumbles, or in this case--cancellations. A convention previously brimming with fanboys, memes, and cosplay is now catching the cold front of industrial action. It's a bit like watching Superman, mid-flight, suddenly remember he's got a fear of heights.

Sure, it's easy to assume the corporate bigwigs at Legendary and the rest who jumped ship early are the villains. After all, who cancels the Christmas of the nerd world? But remember, every Silver Surfer has his Galactus: in this case, it’s the formidable SAG-AFTRA strike.

Remember, our stalwart heroes of Dune: Part Two, including Paul Atreides, Chani, and the Fremen desert tribe didn't stop their quest for revenge because they simply lost the motivation to saunter across deserts. And yet, many of them may be recreating those downcast, mournful looks they so perfected in Dune: Part one, as their SDCC podiums gather dust.

It's no secret that Comic-Con's standing-room-only Hall H is the much-anticipated haven where fandoms are born, nurtured, and occasionally, buried. But all isn't lost, my fellow entertainment aficionados, we still have Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem peeking out of the Paramount shell to bring some nostalgic mutation to the table, and not to mention FX turning Archer loose for one last hurrah.

Get your cosplays ready, dust off your fan theories, and hold tight to that undying fandom spirit. After all, Comic-Con’s main ingredient is its fans, and no strike, however monumental, can ever change that.
