SAG-AFTRA Strike: Nationwide Picket Lines Multiply, Industry Titans Join In
SAG-AFTRA members, known for rallying and picketing, are taking their strike nationwide. A staple in headlines mainly from Los Angeles and New York, the ongoing strike extends well beyond these media hub cities to all corners of the country. In the guild's latest video, they've confirmed that rallies are taking place in 24 out of their 25 local divisions. The only area not currently participating in the picket action is Houston-Austin.
Ongethers for contract fairness have been spotted in major cities and regions across the United States, including Atlanta, Chicago, New Mexico, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Hawaii, Michigan, Nevada, New England, Portland, San Diego, San Francisco-Northern California, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Seattle, Miami, Ohio-Pittsburgh, Arizona-Utah, Nashville, Washington/Mid-Atlantic, Colorado, the Missouri Valley, as well as Dallas-Fort Worth.
Today, the strike focus is honed in on Amazon Studios in Culver City and Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank. The respective pickets will be taking place this morning. At Amazon, SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild picketers will be accompanied by Presidents of the Producers Guild of America, Stephanie Allain and Donald De Line.
The scene at Warner Bros. Studios is a bit different, it will welcome Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA’s National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator, alongside WGA board member Marjorie David. Members of the Producers Guild will be present here as well, with the picketing scheduled to set off at 10 am. The Producers Guild, underscored since the beginning of the strike for their support of SAG-AFTRA, has stood in solidarity as it mustered the difficult decision to strike against the studios, companies, and streamers constituting the AMPTP.
Now, to put on the ol’ Addison hat and pull out a metaphor or two from the entertainment industry.
If this nationwide SAG-AFTRA strike was a cinematic universe, LA and New York have been the Iron Man and Captain America - the eye-catching linchpins of the plotline. But what the latest picketing docudrama has underlined is that the other cities - Atlanta, Chicago, even the likes of Nevada and Michigan - are the essential Ant-Man and the Wasp, the Guardians of the Galaxy, adding depth, nuance, and crucial reinforcements to the team.
What might seem like the third act twist - bringing Producers Guild on the forefront of picket lines in Amazon and Warner Bros. Studios - is like the introduction of Black Widow, a strategic addition adding serious star power and pedigree.
The unity of SAG-AFTRA members spread out in 24 of the guild’s 25 locales, combined with the star power backing, paints a compelling narrative. It seems like the overall message is clear: this isn’t a show that’s done at intermission. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, and in the world of negotiations and strikes, a well populated picket line could very well be the equivalent of a slow-burning, carefully built-up and interconnected set of release-cliffhangers.
No matter which city you’re tuning in from, one thing's for sure: everyone’s waiting, popcorn in hand, to see what happens in the end-credit scenes.
