SAG-AFTRA Strikes Indie Lifeline Amid Hollywood Standoff
SAG-AFTRA, after launching a strike on Hollywood studios on July 14, initiated an interim agreements program for independent productions with no direct ties to members of AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers). These interim agreements allow production to continue despite the prevailing strike. The guild has been adding to the list of projects receiving these agreements since soon after the strike began, following unsuccessful negotiations on a new film and TV contract.
This move by SAG-AFTRA provides it's members a license to work on the approved productions without violating the strike order. Starting from July 27, the guild began sanctioning casting-specific agreements. These enable members to audition and/ or discuss casting-related matters for the productions in question, but disallows traveling, rehearsing, or starting rendering services for the production.
Other agreements from SAG-AFTRA grant films the license to promote at festivals. Michael Mann’s Ferrari- which first made its appearance in Venice Film Festival- is an example of a film under this category. On August 14, the guild stated that all agreements would henceforth exclude WGA-covered projects shot in the U.S, following consultations with the Writers Guild. A day after this announcement, clarification was made that distributors interested in acquiring films at festivals that had interim agreements must adhere to these terms in order to seal a deal.
The projects have been categorized based on films and series using the SAG-AFTRA list. For updates on the titles, it is recommended to continuously check back on the list.

Okay, so SAG-AFTRA, in their infinite grace, decided to throw some lifelines to indies whose shoots were entangled in the crossfire of the big bad industry strike. Effective damage control or a clever stratagem for the long game, it's difficult not to admire their finesse. Folks, keep an eye on those chess players.
Enter the interim agreements: something akin to industry get-out-of-jail-free cards; but with added subclauses and some oddly specific do's and don'ts. And, boy, they've been dishing them out like candy during a parade. The latecomers to the party, however, found their sugar supply tainted by the Writers Guild shenanigans. Dark clouds on the otherwise sunny festival horizon, it seems.
Among the cloud's silver linings, however, shines Michael Mann's Ferrari. Venice, with its winding canals and gondoliers, witnessed the movie's first outing. If there were ever proclamation that film fests were back in the mix, this is probably it.
And in a Santa-esque move, SAG-AFTRA makes a list, presumably checking it twice. As I am in no way an elf, it wouldn't be fair of me to delve into who's been naughty or nice. Instead, I'll raise my glass to those intrepid indies braving unchartered guild waters. Keep on sailing, folks, and may the trade winds be with you.
