Showdown for SAG-AFTRA: Drescher, Gilbert-Dunbar Heat Up Election Race

A. Prentice

SAG-AFTRA’s upcoming election sees current President Fran Drescher and Secretary-Treasurer Joely Fisher running for re-election amidst a stand-off with independent candidates Maya Gilbert-Dunbar and Peter Antico. All four have qualified for their respective ballot positions in a ceremony that has already shown signs of friction.

Drescher and Gilbert-Dunbar have clashed in early exchange of heated emails, with the independent candidate accusing Drescher of failing to protect the rights of members who opted out of the Covid vaccination. Nevertheless, Drescher has been at the forefront of union leaders vocally opposing the enforced vaccination mandates.

Each candidate has released their official statements for the election, appearing on the ballots that were finalized prior to the guild launching its strike on July 14. Drescher's remarks focus on her achievements during her presidential tenure, highlighting her push for a healthier senior supplemental package, an expanded investment portfolio, among other accomplishments. Gilbert-Dunbar, conversely, criticizes the leadership's lack of support for different groups within the guild, pledging to amplify the voices of underrepresented and mistreated members.

Further widening the contest, Gilbert-Dunbar is also vying for the role of guild's Los Angeles Local president against incumbent Jodi Long; simultaneously, her husband, Rockmond Dunbar, is challenging Sheryl Lee Ralph for local vice president.

In their respective statements, contenders Fisher and Antico detail their visions for their role in SAG-AFTRA's administration. Fisher seeks another term to continue her growth-oriented leadership. Antico criticises past financial decisions, pledging financial accountability and improved member benefits.

Apart from the main office bearers, 37 National Board seats, alongside all local officer, local board and convention delegate positions, are up for grabs. SAG-AFTRA members will receive their ballots on August 9, with the results expected to be announced on the evening of September 8. The guild's official election website provides a detailed list of all board candidates and their campaign statements.

And they say Oscar night is the most dramatic event in Hollywood. The upcoming SAG-AFTRA election looks like it could give the Academy Awards a run for their money - and perhaps even its melodrama. Independent or incumbent, each candidate is waving their own banner of revolution, promising a brighter, fairer future for the guild members. If only a Hollywood scriptwriter was around to pen this drama - or perhaps a hit comedy in the making?

President Drescher’s email saga is more gripping than any episode of "The Nanny" she ever headlined. She's in a digital wrestling match with the independents, all the while maintaining her stance on vaccination rights. Now that's a balancing act worth watching.

And then we have independent candidate Gilbert-Dunbar, who is not just throwing her hat into the ring - she's practically tossing in the entire wardrobe. Running for both guild president and LA Local president concurrently? That's ambitious, even for Hollywood's standards.

As for the board seats and various local official roles, these undercard matches boast compelling narratives of their own. With all these power plays and promises of change, one thing's for sure: SAG-AFTRA's elections won't be relegated to the closing credits this year.

So, grab your popcorn and comfy seats folks; it's showtime at SAG-AFTRA, and we're in for a suspenseful feature. Just remember, in Hollywood, the show always goes on, no matter the cast of characters or the plot twists unfolding in real time.
