Stephen Chow Hollywood Movie

Addison Smith

The most famous of his directors is probably Zhang Yimou, best known for films like House in the Mountains and The Story of Qiu Yue. He has also directed some of China’s biggest box office hits including Hero (2002) and To Live (2013).

But before he became one of Asia’s highest paid filmmakers, Chow had to struggle just to survive as an aspiring filmmaker.

He spent years trying to break into the industry with little success, until he was given the opportunity to direct his first feature film. It wouldn’t be his last either - he would go onto to make around twenty more!

His first movie made him over $100 million at the box-office making it one of the highest grossing movies ever released by a Chinese director. Since then, he has gone on to direct several other successful projects such as Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle.

And even though he now makes considerably less money than he did back when he started out, he still enjoys a level of fame that very few can say they have experienced.

He has won three Academy Awards and been nominated many times since 2000! Not only does he enjoy recognition from international bodies, but he also receives lots of praise online where his popularity continues to grow.

It seems that people are quite fascinated by his personal life too, as he has spoken about his relationships and family memberships in various media interviews.

His famous movies include “Shaolin Soccer,” “Kung Fu Hustle,” and “Police Story”

While his early career was mostly in action films, it wasn’t until he made the 2003 hit comedy movie “The Kung Fury” that he really found his niche as an actor.

In this off-the-wall sci-fi/comedy film, which is set in the future, China has gone bankrupt and people have become very aggressive and violent due to lack of money.

A second country called The Great United States has also collapsed and its citizens are now trying to survive by looting and pillaging their neighbors.

But instead of guns, they use soccer balls to fight each other.

He also directed “My Blueberry Hill” and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”

Born in Hong Kong to Chinese parents, he grew up watching Westerns and action movies. At age thirteen, he entered his first film competition, where he took home several awards for his short films.

He later attended Beijing Film Academy, but dropped out before graduating due to lack of interest. It was there that he made his directorial debut with the martial arts comedy movie “Oryou-Hanbai Hanbaizhu!” (translated as Kung Fu Hustle). The movie became an instant hit at China’s box office.

Chow would go onto direct over twenty more movies in Mandarin, including many popular comedies such as “Love Is Not Love” and “The Crazy Rich Asians”. His most well known work is almost certainly 2005’s “Shaolin Soccer”, which grossed $109 million worldwide.

In recent years though, things have been less successful for him. Recent efforts like 2011′s “Lost In Thailand” and 2013′s “You Don’t Know Jack” were both commercial flops, while 2012′s “Action Jackson” barely broke even.

Chow recently made a Hollywood movie called “The King”

The film follows two best friends who embark on an around-the-world journey to find true happiness.

It is heavily inspired by the life of Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu, as well as stories of real people with no money or power who lived their lives in pursuit of happiness.

Chow wanted to make this movie because he believes that we all have our own version of truth which makes us happy, and none of it can be proved wrong.

Hence, his personal quest for happiness led him to explore different paths towards finding joy and the climax of the movie sees him realize that what mattered most was not being rich or powerful, but living an honest live full of integrity.

He also comes to understand that you cannot take credit for your success and that giving away everything you have does not guarantee lasting happiness.

Some of his other movies include “Flashback,” “Lost and Found in Beijing,” and “Who Am I?”
