Strike Halts "Deadpool 3" Production Amidst Marvel Star Reunions
Production on the highly anticipated "Deadpool 3" has come to a halt following the decision of SAG-AFTRA to proceed with a strike. This confirmation was brought to light through Deadline yesterday. As it currently stands, the Marvel spectacle is the largest project to be affected by the said industrial action. Marvel has been reached out to for a statement.
In the wake of Ryan Reynolds' recent sneak peek at Hugh Jackman’s re-emergence as Wolverine in "Deadpool 3", the news has sent shockwaves through the entertainment community. The teaser, taken from Reynolds' Instagram stories, depicts Reynolds and a decked-out Wolverine in a black and yellow ensemble.
Jackman is set to bring to the Deadpool franchise his iconic portrayal of the adamantium-clawed mutant. His character has been seen in an impressive nine films from 2000 to 2017, from the X-Men series to "Logan". Additionally, adding the excitement surrounding the franchise is the news of Jennifer Garner reviving her Marvel role as Elektra, her performance first seen in 2003's "Daredevil". The direction and production of this Marvel threequel are being led by Shawn Levy, and the plot remains undisclosed. The script was penned by a handful of talented writers including Reynolds himself, Levy, Paul Wernick, Rhett Reese, and Zeb Wells.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, Reynolds, and Levy are also taking the helm in producing this project. Before being struck by the WGA strike, the film's premiere has been moved up on Disney’s release schedule from November 8 to May 3, 2024. During this difficult time, SAG-AFTRA's members are geared to join the picket lines early Friday morning.
Union president Fran Drescher will be leading the joining members on the picket sidelines, along with Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA's national executive director and chief negotiator, as well as members of the guild’s negotiating committee. During the strike's ratification yesterday, celebrities attending the Oppenheimer premiere, Matt Damon and Emily Blunt included, departed the screening to show their solidarity with actors on strike.
Now, onto the wit.
The Marvel Universe, known for its countless plot twists, cliffhangers and surprise appearances, has just added another one. This time having less to do with supervillains and unassuming heroes, and more to do with contracts, unions, and picket lines. Welcome to the real world, where a snap of the fingers won't let production magically resurge.
Having a glimpse at Deadpool 3's newcomer lineup, one might think they've stumbled upon a secret Marvel reunion. Hugh Jackman's reprise as Wolverine? Jennifer Garner as Elektra? Are we hoping to compensate for the delay with an overkill of nostalgia? Perhaps saving those gripes for when we finally get a glimpse of Elektra alongside Deadpool, gyrating to 80s tunes.
The fact that Fran Drescher, best known as television's lovable "The Nanny", now leading picket lines, creates imagery that even Stan Lee wouldn’t be able to craft. Mr. Sheffield certainly didn’t prepare her for this. And if Drescher ever thought dealing with a trio of upper-crust children was a handful, handling a guild on strike amid Hollywood’s elite surely gives the term 'difficult teenager' a whole new meaning.
As for Matt Damon and Emily Blunt's show of solidarity? Well, nothing spells "union support" quite like exiting the red carpet of a premiere with an intensity that would overshadow the Good Will Hunting chase scene.
So as we wait, rather impatiently, for our resident fourth-wall-breaking antihero, we might as well occupy ourselves with these off-screen dramatics. After all, without the occasional stumble, Hollywood's walk would lose its charm. Here's hoping that the industry's inevitable rebound is as impressive and seamless as Deadpool’s regeneration abilities.
