Viola Davis' G20 Scores SAG-AFTRA Agreement Amidst Walkout
G20, an action-thriller from MRC featuring acclaimed actress Viola Davis in a dual role as star and producer, has won an interim agreement from the Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA). This recent development was earlier revealed on the guild's official website. This star-studded title landed a waiver, despite Amazon’s involvement, as the project is confirmed as an MRC production and will only be distributed by Amazon. As it stands, Viola Davis and the producers have no immediate intentions to resume production yet.
G20 follows several high-profile projects that have previously gained interim agreements. A few on the list includes Apple TV+’s series Tehran, New Line's acquisition The Watchers from Ishana Night Shyamalan, Glenn Close’s upcoming film, The Summer Book, and A24 titles Mother Mary and Dreams of a Unicorne.
Adding G20 to the list, the actors guild has now issued nearly 100 interim agreements to films and series since the commencement of the SAG-AFTRA walkout earlier this month. Some find the concept confounding, leading to frustration as it appears projects from mini majors like A24 can find themselves alongside ultra low-budget Indies. Notably, earlier this week, The Gray House, a Civil War espionage drama series produced by Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman, also secured an agreement.
Now, cue the metaphorical lights, camera, and action as we delve deeper into Tinseltown's central plot.
It's almost cinematic how this MRC production secured an interim agreement with SAG-AFTRA, despite the Amazon link, in what can best be described as Hollywood's own rendition of "David and Goliath." This bargain deal places G20 in an exciting ensemble cast of earlier films and series that have scored similar contracts, adding another twist to the ever-unfolding saga of the entertainment industry.
And isn't it amusing that despite looming questions and frustrations around interim agreements, they continue to be handed out like coveted golden tickets? They bring to mind a cryptic blockbuster puzzle that has Hollywood observers on their toes, with plot lines featuring major players like A24 and budding Indies locked in an unlikely tango.
Have we stumbled on an unexpected plot twist, or is this all part of the screenplay? Is Hollywood’s hill crest turning into a level playing field where both the mini major studios and low-budget Indies have equal negotiating power?
Though, where there's a new script, there are always further revisions. And while the SAG-AFTRA walkout continues, the interim agreement plot thickens. Each new waiver -from Tehran to G20- adds another cliffhanger, invites more fleshed-out characters, and introduces more intriguing subplots, making it anyone’s guess what the next episode will bring.
And as always, Hollywood never fails to remind us that drama isn’t exclusive to the silver screen. They offer it in spades wherever, whenever, and however. A friendly Toast where each tectonic shift brings another chance to lift our glasses and philosophize, "That's showbiz!"
