What Is Cinematography Reddit
As our society becomes more connected through technology, people have different ways of communicating with one another. With the rise in social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, there has been an increase in the amount of content that people share.
This is great for giving others a glimpse into what you are doing every day, but it can get expensive! If we were to take away all of your free time, you would be limited on how you spend money because you wouldn’t have any.
It is very similar to when someone posts a picture or video online- everyone who views the material will pay to see it. The cost is usually attributed to software, equipment, or training.
There are many websites where individuals can go to learn how to create their own videos and/or photos. Some of these sites offer both beginner and advanced courses, so even if you are already working in the field, you can still gain knowledge from them.
These sites also often run contests and giveaways which could win you some extra cash to invest in new gear. There is no wrong way to advance in the art form of cinematography, so why not enjoy learning as much as possible?
We hope this article inspired you to begin creating your own footage or gave you the confidence to start shooting something yourself.
Equipment needed

To begin, you do not need expensive or fancy equipment to be a great cinematographer! In fact, having very basic camera settings is more than enough to start filming your own movies!
There are two main reasons why this is important to know. First, it shows that anyone can create their own movie with the right resources. And second, it breaks down some of the most common misconceptions about being a filmmaker.
Most people assume that to become a successful cinematographer, you have to spend a large amount of money buying lots of flashy gadgets. This isn’t always the case though.
Cameras don’t necessarily make you a good director just by having one once, either. It takes training to use all of the features effectively and properly. Plus, some of these features cost extra to use as well.
Don’t get too focused on the façade that big studio films have, where A-listers like Brad Pitt seem to have their own helicopter and private jets. That level of production doesn’t exist for everyone, even if they would like to think it does.
Understanding lighting

Lighting is one of the most important parts of cinematography. Different lights can be used to create different looks for your film! There are many types of light, such as natural sunlight, studio lights, flash, and more.
Natural daylight is the most common type of indoor or outdoor light source in films. When filming outside, there’s usually an overhead sun that is needed to completely wash out the shadow under someone’s chin, so it must be blocked either with a grey card or by having them not shave their beard for the day.
Studio lights are good sources of light when trying to make things look very bright and polished. These typically don't contain any warm toned shades, instead being all cool ones. By using several lamps of various colors, they're able to achieve this effect.
Flash is another way to add light to a scene, but only if allowed through licensing agreements or if you have a device that has enough power to use as a camera flash. It is totally unnecessary to use a lot of flash unless doing so was part of the initial concept or script.
These examples show how different types of lighting affect the tone and feel of a movie. People who love cinema will enjoy looking into what types of lighting artists and cinematographers use in filmmaking.
Exposing correctly

As mentioned before, taking candid photos is totally fine as long as you are aware of your settings and what modes exist. But trying to get that perfect self-portrait or action shot with someone in it can be tricky!
There are two main reasons why most people have trouble getting those great shots. The first is exposure. Sometimes photographers will tell their followers not to use autofocus because it may take away from the image but this isn’t always true.
By using AF, however, you need to know how much light you have so your photo doesn’t look very dark. You also want to make sure there aren’t any bright lights around that could wash out the colors in the person’s face or add too many shadows which would lower the overall contrast of the picture.
The second reason happens when you do focus on something and then try to take the picture. Most people don’t realize that moving things takes time so if you wanted a nice still portrait, wait until the person is standing completely steady before clicking the shutter.
White balance

When shooting landscapes, there are three main things that affect how the image looks- white balance, depth of field, and shutter speed. Changing any one of these can make a big difference in the look you get your photograph.
Landscapes have a very natural light source coming from the sun or other sources, so when taking pictures outside it is important to ensure that this light is properly balanced. This is called white balance.
There are two types of white balances you can use - cloudy day mode and direct sunlight mode. Cloudy day mode tries to neutralize the color of the sky by adding some warm shades to make it seem like it is not as bright. Direct sunlight mode removes all colors from the sky to make it feel more blue and stark.
You will probably want to experiment with both modes before picking one. There are many ways to do this, but most photoshopping software has an option to choose what type of white balance photo you would like to apply.
