What you need to know about script writing

When someone tells you that they want to learn how to write scripts, it can be tricky to know what to tell them. There are many ways to describe writing a script, but none of them seem totally clear or helpful.

After you have chosen your topic, the next step is to decide who your main characters will be. Make sure their personalities match the genre, and that they are at least somewhat realistic.

Next, find a setting or context for the story. It can be current events, something from your life, or anything else. Once these three things are established, the final step is to write your script.

You may want to take some time to edit and polish your writing before moving on to the third stage.

Existence of scriptwriting as a profession

As we have seen, writing for television is a lot different from writing for books or newspapers. But that does not mean there is no professional career path in TV writing!

There are several ways to work in storytelling in media, and most people can find employment somewhere along this spectrum. Some write for TV shows as writers, some as story editors, and others as scripting professionals who write individual scenes or sequences.

There are many great script-writing software packages available to you. Many of these have free versions that you can try out before investing in the paid version.

Some examples of popular script editing software include Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Adobe Indesign, And even Apple’s Pages and Numbers.

All of these applications allow you to create, edit, and organize your scripts. Some may offer more features than others, but they all seem to do their job well!

And while some are totally free to use, most require either an annual subscription or at least a monthly one to fully benefit from their services.

Ways to become a screenwriter

Being able to write for the screen is not like writing for any other medium. You cannot simply pick up a camera or smartphone and start writing!

Screenwriting is definitely a craft, but it’s a very specific one. Screenwriters must know how to tell stories in both linear and non-linear formats, use believable dialogue, develop characters through narrative arcs, add dramatic tension, etc.

However, beyond those basic fundamentals, what makes a great screenplay is being able to take material that people have already created and retell that story in your own unique way.

There are many ways to learn about storytelling, but none of them prepare you to be a successful writer unless you actually put what you've learned into practice by writing some scripts.

Know your audience

As we mentioned before, scriptwriters work in an industry that values communication skills highly. If you are not able to connect with other people, then it will be difficult to succeed as a writer.

This is especially true for professional writers. Most of them spend most of their time talking about writing, so if you can’t talk about it, then how well you do your job matters little.

It’s like trying to drive a car without knowing how to use your hands. You would probably get very nervous while driving!

If you want to write for television, then you have to know what makes a story interesting and engaging for that genre. And if you don’t, then you should take some classes or read some books to learn.

But beyond just learning the basics of storytelling, you need to figure out who your audience is. Is this for kids, adults, sitcoms, dramatic TV shows, etc? All of which require different stories and styles.

The more you understand your medium, the better writer you will become.

Always remain creative

As we have seen, writing for the screen is not the same as writing for print or radio. But that does not mean you cannot use elements of all those genres to create stories for television shows and movies!

Screenwriting is an art form just like any other. You can be very artistic without using much literature as material.

Literature is the study of written works, so why not apply that to your work? Use novels, short stories, poetry, and even songs to inspire new ideas or rework old ones.

The best way to get inspiration from literary pieces is to read them out loud. If you are reading a book yourself, record yourself or ask someone else to do it for you.

Thinking about what makes a piece interesting will help you find things to add or take away from yours. Literary genius Albert Einstein said something along these lines:

“Everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler.”

So if you are having trouble coming up with great story ideas, try looking at popular books, films, and TV series and see how they were done before bringing in your own creativity.

Develop your own voice

Even if you read a ton of books and take writing courses, unless you develop your own unique style, no one will believe that you are actually good at it.

Writing is like music - every writer has an individual style that makes their words sound natural.

Your style can be influenced by things such as where you were born, what culture you were raised in, or how you learned to speak (i.e. whether you are left-handed or right-handed).

However, beyond these basics, there are three main components that make up your writing style. They are vocabulary, grammar, and tone.

Vocabulary includes the word choice you use to describe things. For example, when someone talks about something that made them happy, you could choose to use the word “happy” instead. Yours would depend on the context and what kind of mood you wanted to create with your article!

Grammar covers using correct punctuation and tenses to write sentences correctly. This is particularly important since most people now rely heavily on texting and emailing rather than talking on the phone for communication.

Lastly, the tone is how you convey messages. It is very hard to tell whether a message comes from someone who does not care, or if they do not know what they are saying.

Keep up with popular culture

Recent developments in film, television, music and gaming have left an abundant amount of material to be mined for writing tips and tricks. Reading through their scripts is a great way to do this.

Reading through other people’s scripts is one of the most effective ways to learn how to write your own script.

By reading others’ work, you will find that some things are missing from your own writing. These things can then be incorporated into yours or even replaced with something similar.

These examples show how important it is to read written materials.
