Writers Guild Resumes Talks with AMPTP After 102-Day Strike

A. Prentice

After enduring four uninterrupted days of intense negotiations, the Writers Guild has announced that it will return to discussions next week with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). The restarting of dialogues comes after a substantial 102-days hiatus with the union on strike.

"The AMPTP offered responses to our proposals in all work areas," the guild communicated in a recent notification to its members. This announcement came on the heels of a week filled with constant proposal exchanges, laying the groundwork for continued negotiations slated for the coming week.

While expressing gratitude for messages of support and unity, the Writers Guild urged its members to approach third-party rumors with skepticism, reassuring that significant updates would be shared by the group directly.

In a recent development, a "Call to Action" has been issued by the WGA West to its members. Highlighting media consolidations as a significant root cause of the current strike, the call encourages them to file public comments with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) in favor of proposed revisions to their Merger Guidelines.

These guidelines are intended as comprehensive policies empowering law enforcement to scrutinize and control consolidation activities robustly. This move comes a day after the guild made a public call for increased government regulation on industry giants like Disney, Amazon, and Netflix, which stand accused of employing "anti-competitive practices."

In a publicly-released report, the WGA West levies claims of such major entities abusing their dominant position in the market to disadvantage competitors, inflate consumer prices, and depress wages for the creative workforce.

Hold your breath, Hollywood. Our beloved Writers Guild's back at the negotiation table, and it's taking no prisoners. If Tarantino wrote a script about union negotiation, this is what it would look like. There's drama, there's tension, and there's an underdog fighting for what's right.

That "Call to Action"? Yep, that's our Act 3 plot twist. The guild takes the pen, rallying against the media gargoyles who they say are hoarding all the magic movie beans.

Streaming mammoths like Netflix, Amazon, and the House-Which-Mickey-Built are on notice. Hell, the guild even went so far as to stand toe-to-toe with the FTC and the DOJ, urging their members to support potential policy changes. That’s a big leap, taking their fight from guild headquarters into the sticky labyrinth of regulatory law enforcement.

For the writers out there, it’s the equivalent of stepping into third act with protagonist-against-the-system bravado. It's a big, bold move, and deserves applause.

Who knows what the next week will bring? More gridlock? Breakthroughs? Plot twists? We'll keep the popcorn ready. In this theater, the Writers Guild is both the director and the star of the show. They're writing the story as it goes and fighting for the happy ending they believe in. Can't wait to see how this one ends. Break a leg, folks!
