How Long Does It Take To Learn Sound Design

Addison Smith

Sound design has become one of the most widely discussed aspects in film.

As technology becomes more and more advanced, directors of today can take advantage of the infinite ways in which it can be used to tell a story, yet there is still a seemingly endless amount of people who would like to learn how to create the sounds used in these movies.

What is sound design?

A basic definition of sound design is the creation of original sounds for a production. Most often, these sounds are meant to create a soothing, relaxing ambiance for a consumer.

A sound designer can work with numerous pieces of equipment (or the engineers that build those pieces of equipment) to create a certain ambiance, which includes a frequency range, rhythm, volume, pitch, timbre, and so on.

For example, if you were to add a tone like the sound of breaking glass, the effect would sound like a gentle “snap” or a “crackle.” This sound would instantly transport someone back in time to their first love.

But what does that have to do with creating ambiance?

If you go into a movie theater and a 40,000-pound movie screen was designed to create a “silent atmosphere,” or a “old world” vibe, the audience might be confused or turned off.

But if you took that same screen and added a tone like the one above, it would instantly transport the audience to an old, dusty library where they would be able to immerse themselves in the story.

So, why did I tell you to learn sound design?

Well, I know I’m preaching to the choir here, but if you would like to make more money, you need to learn all you can about this industry.

If you can master sound design and start earning more money, you can create ambiance for entire movies. And since sound design is so essential in our industry, knowing how it works can make you valuable.

But, if you need to learn a specific skill, like sound design, it takes time and practice.

How long does sound design take to learn?

In order to create ambiance and create new sounds, there is a process that needs to be followed:

Research: After deciding what type of ambiance you would like to create, go online and check out various sound libraries. These libraries will give you a list of different sounds that you can incorporate into your ambiance.

Here’s a good list of sound libraries that I’ve compiled:

Influencing: Determine the exact sound you want to use in your ambiance and learn how to use the software in order to create the sound.

For example, say that you wanted to use a tone like the sound of running water, then download some “water sound effects” software.

You would go to the library and browse through different sound effects. The software will show you the different sounds, and the sound designers will give you feedback on how to use the sounds.

This feedback will help you improve your sound.

Composition: After you learn how to use the sound effects, compose a piece of music that would fit with your sounds.

You will need a song in the key of D major, which is the key you created your ambiance in.

You might also need to add some effects, which would be dark tone, rhythm, and volume.

For people who do want to pursue an audio career, I would recommend that they seek out opportunities in their respective fields, and then use their basic knowledge of the subject to put themselves in the best position possible.

This is where the “stretching” comes in, and it is usually the result of doing some substantial work in an area which they are interested in.

This process is important in order to identify your unique skill set and skills, and to also determine your needs and priorities.

I would also like to remind you that you do not need to spend all of your time learning sound design.

While learning the theory and fundamentals of the subject is extremely important, you should spend a large amount of time honing your skills, honing your skills, honing your skills!

I recently completed my final masters degree in information technology, but I am by no means a technology expert.

Conclusion

Please remember that the most important part of becoming a professional sound designer is learning the theory and fundamentals of sound design, and then learning how to apply those fundamentals in your projects.

At a high level, you will still be working with the elements of audio that you are already familiar with, and you will be using them in the context of your projects.

In my opinion, mastering the fundamentals of sound design is an extremely important aspect of becoming a professional sound designer, and it is one that I feel needs to be emphasized because many people focus on the process of creating great audio, rather than working on their fundamentals.

To summarize, the next time that you are working on a project, try to pick a task that you feel that you are most familiar with, and then work on something simple.

Ideally, you will be doing something which you have had experience with before, but make sure that you are still learning and stretching yourself in some way.

This is how you will eventually get to a point where you can become a professional sound designer.
