How Long Does It Take To Write A Movie

So what is the average time to write a script? According to a “New York Times” article (from Dec. 18, 2017) “The Script” by Kim Masters and Michael Lewis, over 1,300 feature films were directed in 2017, which is a 29 percent increase from 2016, according to the WGA West.

The report that Masters and Lewis compile is not consistent in every year, but “over the last five years, the median number of drafts on which a script was based has held steady at seven.”

If I had to guess, I would say it takes about 3-4 months to write a feature film script, maybe a little less if you are used to screenwriting on the page or if you are an established script writer and feel comfortable working out your scripts.

On the contrary, if you are just starting out as a first time script writer, then you probably will write a script in 6-8 weeks, no matter what industry you work in.

So for you, the next 4-6 months to write a script will be difficult. Don’t despair though, the 3-4 month estimate is not totally accurate.

There is a long list of factors that can affect how long a movie takes to write, for example, writing the first draft of a script is just as good as writing a fourth or fifth draft.

The three main stages of writing a script are:

A first draft (generally referred to as a skeleton script); a second draft (generally referred to as a full script); and the final draft (generally referred to as a complete script, including all special effects and music).

As with many aspects of film, there are good methods to write a script, and there are bad methods to write a script. If you want to write a screenplay you need to be able to get a first draft done.

“The Walking Dead” is a great example of how to write a script in about 3 months. “Dead” was written in 21 days (excluding the pilot), and the pilot script was pretty rough. Yet the show was sold to AMC and we all know the rest of the story.

Creativity and Planning

Most people don’t have the patience to write a screenplay the way it should be written. Most people think the world is watching their movie, and they just need to sit down and write the damn thing.

I have no doubt that it is hard to write a screenplay if you don’t have the patience, but when you do have the patience, it makes your movie.

Spending too much time and effort on creating the perfect first draft, and not enough time working on the second and third drafts, will kill your chances at making your movie the way you want it to be. Just make sure that you spend your time in the areas that make your screenplay the best it can be.

Is there a right and wrong way to write a screenplay?

We would all like to believe that there is a right way to write a screenplay, and a wrong way to write a screenplay. But in the end the only way to find out how to write a great script is to write one. w

Some people spend a lot of time and energy on the first draft and it turns out that the second and third drafts are pretty crap. Some people just simply can’t write good scripts.

If you find that you simply can’t write a screenplay, then all you can do is edit it and work on the next one.

Step One: No Shame in Mistakes

If your movie is terrible, don’t be ashamed of it. Mistakes are part of the process. Don’t worry if your movie has a bunch of scenes that just don’t work, it’s OK.

Because you are on the journey of learning. If something doesn’t work, move on to the next scene and keep going.

Just realize that perfection is impossible. Stop trying to write a perfect movie. It’s almost impossible to make the perfect movie, and you will never get to it.

You have to keep going, because mistakes are part of the journey. Keep your writing skills sharp, and don’t allow yourself to get into a slump if your movie is bad.

You just have to get back up and try again.

If you are truly interested in making a movie, then you have to commit to spending some time learning the craft. Some people only want to write one movie in their entire life, and they think that writing a screenplay is a time-consuming process.

It takes a lot of dedication to write a screenplay that you want to see as a movie. You can’t just sit down and write a movie without knowing what you are doing, or without learning some other aspects of film-making.

Step Two: Change Things, But Don’t Get Rid Of Them

You will never have a perfect script if you don’t spend a lot of time writing it. The only thing that you can do is learn as much as you can while you are writing it.

Don’t worry about keeping things that don’t work. Keep writing the good stuff, and get rid of the bad stuff.

Some of the greatest movies in history were made by people who had worked on other films before.

It’s also good to change some things as you go along. You can’t make the same movie over and over again.

You will end up making the same mistakes over and over again, if you don’t change things. So, if something doesn’t work, you should change it.

Step Three: Be Honest With Yourself

If something is not working, write it down. Don’t try to pretend that it will work just because it’s your movie. You have to be honest with yourself.

Don’t try to force the plot that you wrote into the movie you are currently writing. Just stop and realize that the script you are writing now is not going to work.

If you don’t like something that you have written, then write it down. If you don’t like something that you have written, then write it down.

Just write down what is not working, and keep working on that.

Step Four: Learn To Tell The Difference Between Good And Bad Writing

You can tell the difference between good and bad writing pretty easily. If you find that your dialogue is confusing, then change it.

If you don’t like how much dialogue is in your screenplay, then cut it.

You can read a lot of scripts, and get a good idea of what to do to make your script better. The first thing you need to realize is that you will need to change some things.

Don’t just start hacking away at your script, don’t let yourself get out of control. Just take it one scene at a time.

Sometimes you have to take it one scene at a time to figure out what is really working in the script.
