Why Hollywood Stars Are Leaving California
California is the definition of a dream state. The beaches, the mountains, the earthquakes, the celebrities, the weather, everything is great about the state.
However, people who actually live in the state may beg to differ. The state has never recovered from the recession.
Millions have fled the state in search of greener pastures. If you think it can’t happen to you, look no further than the latest figures, millions are leaving California.
Why people are leaving California:
California is the 6th largest economy in the world. The state is truly an economic powerhouse. However, with the recent numbers, it has taken a beating.
The United States Census Bureau announced that over 100,000 more people left the state than moved in for 2016. The trend of the state losing more residents than it gained accelerated.
In 2015, over 229,000 people moved out of the state while only 93,000 people moved in.
This was in the midst of the economic downturn. State officials touted that the trend was due to a weak housing market. California had been in a housing bubble, and many houses were overvalued.
However, experts point out that the recession just accelerated the problem. Californians are leaving because they are struggling to make ends meet.
Cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco are notoriously high cost areas. People leave the state because they are finding it impossible to afford the rents.
In Los Angeles, for example, the average rent is over $2,200 per month. That means that a single adult living in California has to make $30,000 a year just to afford to live in the state.
California has a massive housing problem
There is an excess of more than a million housing units, but no one is willing to buy them. Millennials are moving out of the state because they can’t find jobs.
Many workers are simply choosing not to move out of state. If California wants to avoid mass out migration, it has to make it easier to buy a home.
The following charts show how difficult it is to buy a home in many areas of the state:
Renters are moving out of the state for similar reasons. In many major cities, rent is almost as high as wages are.
This leaves renters having to live with their parents. In most cases, they are choosing to pay off student loan debts and stay put.
Millennials who are on track to pay off student loans can’t find a decent paying job. Instead, they move back in with their parents to save a little bit of money.
California is plagued with over-regulation. Many cities are hell on wheels, and it’s because they’re too hot to live in.
People just want to live a comfortable life. Unfortunately, the state is afraid to let people live the way they want to live.
So, as a result, California is suffering from homelessness, drug overdoses, and a crime epidemic. California officials point to legalization as the cause, but the fact is that the problems have always been there.
All the problems that California has are a direct result of government.
California is out of control
Taxes are too high, water is too expensive, the cost of living is too high, and the number of police officers and government is too high.
If California wants to be a leader in the country, it will need to get out of its own way. The tax burdens must be lowered, regulations must be significantly reduced, and government services must be reduced.
As a result, California has lost over a million residents in the last two years.
One of the largest personal income taxes is a 13.3 percent state income tax and the California Franchise Tax Board estimates that about $8.2 billion of the tax-payer's $10 billion income is lost to tax evasion.
Hollywood stars often leave California because they get tired of the cost of living and want to get away
It is not because the weather is too hot nor because the landscape is too barren. It is because there are many opportunities to live in places with much lower costs of living and the tax climate is favorable.
The last time California received a new big budget was in 2012, the California budget is $190 billion. This year's budget is $181 billion.
With these massive budget shortfalls, the state is faced with the prospect of additional cuts to things like education. The tax burden on the state is crushing and costs of living are high.
The state has a problem and legislators are considering various measures to solve it.
Many celebrities have now moved out of California because they are fed up with the political and tax environment in California. They have taken to social media to express their concerns.
The California economy is not thriving. The most recent employment data shows California's economy is not doing great either. The data below from the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics gives a very clear look into California's economy and its leading cause of concern.
California is experiencing a severe lack of jobs
Even more disturbing, California's job loss has been far more than the national average. The U.S. economy lost jobs during February and March at a 1.7 percent rate and California lost jobs at a much faster 2.8 percent rate.
This is more than double the U.S. unemployment rate of 3.9 percent.
Many of the Hollywood stars have pointed out that they feel the lack of affordable housing in California is a huge problem. The problem is even worse for the less well-off Californians.
The average price of a house in California is about four times the median income in the state. Many people cannot afford to buy a home in California.
The problem with this is that as the cost of living rises, that is less income that many people earn and makes it increasingly difficult to afford housing in California.
Many people cannot afford to buy homes in California and are forced to rent. The rising cost of rent in California has created severe rent shortages for a lot of workers.
