Picture this: your new movie or series has hit it big in the US, breaking various records in the process. Great news, right? Well, yes it is, at least for the US market.

But these days, no major studio or production company can disregard markets and audiences outside the US. In fact, the biggest players in the entertainment industry are investing heavily in international markets, and the biggest media properties of the modern era hit it big everywhere, not just in a single market.

Ok, so you want to distribute your movie or show in many other territories in the hopes of finding an even larger audience and bringing in even more revenue.

But will it click with audiences in other countries? How should it be promoted? After all, marketing can make or break a new release, and even a minor cultural difference can lead to vastly different responses.

Major media companies are faced with these challenges all the time, and the way they ensure that each release has the best possible chance of succeeding in various markets is by working with specialists who know their markets extremely well.

These publicity specialists work hard to connect with audiences in a specific country, and in the process, they can increase hype for a new release.

The studio sees a higher return on investment, and viewers in different territories get exposed to more movies and shows they might love.

For over 20 years, Caroline Maréchal has helped launch numerous publicity campaigns in her home country of France. That includes conceiving publicity events and working directly with talent, executives, and members of the press. In particular, Maréchal has worked extensively with Warner Bros. and Universal.

Maréchal is currently working as a freelance publicity specialist for film studios, PR agencies, and streaming services.

Maréchal is also the first public relations specialist to join French in Motion, a new organization dedicated to building French and American partnerships in film, TV, and documentary filmmaking.

She has an incredible knowledge of publicity, the French market, and French film festivals. But above all, Maréchal loves cinema, and after talking with Maréchal last week, we can say confidently that that passion is infectious.

For a short time, Maréchal made us feel like insiders, sharing the ins and outs of her work, even telling us stories about some of her biggest publicity campaigns to date. So join us for a guided tour of a side of show business that rarely gets the spotlight.

Passion first

From production to post-production to marketing, you'll have a hard time finding an entertainment industry pro who doesn't love what they do.

This isn't the kind of business that someone gets into by accident. In fact, any filmmakers reading this are probably nodding their heads right now. You have to love the work to make it in entertainment, and fortunately for Maréchal, her love for filmmaking is abundant.

This passion keeps her motivated, but it also helps her keep her film buff status up to snuff.

"It's crucial to have a passion for cinema when you're a film industry public relations specialist, especially in France. You're in daily contact with expert critics, and you have to work well with them to promote a film. Thankfully, I've had a passion for cinema since I was a little girl, and these days I live and breathe entertainment."

France certainly has a worldwide reputation for both producing and appreciating incredible filmmaking, from top-dog critics to the moviegoing public. So publicity specialists like Maréchal have to be the best of the best to execute effective campaigns.

There's more, too: like any marketing professional worth their salt, publicists also need to know their audience backward and forward. Let's take a closer look at that part of the job.

Knowing the films, knowing the markets

This is what we were going on about at the top of the article: publicity specialists have to know how to sell a particular movie or show in a particular market.

That requires a deep knowledge of both the media itself and the market in which they're trying to sell it. Cultural context is extremely important to this process.

For us Americans, it's easy to oversimplify when we think of other countries. For example, sometimes we might think that the French are very similar to us. Other times, we might think the French are quite different, with their own tastes and preferences.

The truth is somewhere in between. In certain ways, we're all quite similar, and in other ways, we're really not that similar at all.

A big part of Maréchal's work involves considering cultural moors and preferences when planning a promotional campaign.

Maréchal grew up in France, and so is naturally highly familiar with French culture, and her extensive work with American studios and clients has given her a detailed understanding of US culture as well.

In her publicity work, she serves as a kind of liaison, making key decisions based on this expertise.

"I know both the American and the French market extremely well thanks to many years of experience. Still, I'm always pushing myself and doing research so that I can answer any question and do the best work I can."

Successful film publicity work is a combination of natural talents and skills learned through experience, and now it's time to share some details on two of Maréchal's biggest publicity campaigns, during which all of these skills were put to use.

Game of Thrones

Do we need to formally introduce Game of Thrones? Probably not. It was one of the most successful crossover hits in recent entertainment history, reaffirming HBO and author George R.R. Martin as industry titans and launching or reigniting multiple acting careers.

It was a very big deal indeed, and Maréchal was directly involved in the promotion of the French home entertainment releases for every season. Altogether, that represents a huge amount of work, but the event that stands out in Maréchal's memory was a fan screening for season four that was held at the historic theater, Le Grand Rex, in Paris.

"I worked closely with the French broadcaster OCS and the EMEA HBO team. We invited three leads from the show: Maisie Williams, Sophie Turner, and Liam Cunningham. There were a number of other events right before the screening as well, including a signing, a press junket, photoshoots, a red carpet, and a stage presentation."

There was a ton of legwork to make it all happen, but it paid off. Thousands of fans had the chance to share their excitement for the show and even meet members of the cast.

For a show that already had such an active fanbase, this was a brilliant move: letting existing fans enjoy themselves while also getting other fans excited in the process, reminding them of their love for the series or maybe even creating more fans.

Dunkirk

Next up, Maréchal shared a story from her time working on the French publicity campaign for world-renowned director Christopher Nolan's WWII epic, Dunkirk.

The film was critically acclaimed and went on to win multiple Oscars. But long before awards season, Maréchal was already working to promote the film in France.

During production, she arranged set visits for the press, and when it was time for the film's French premiere, Maréchal and the team pulled out all the stops.

Since Dunkirk is itself a small town in the northwest region of France, it was the perfect location for the French premiere.

"We did a TV line junket on the mole where the director shot one of the famous scenes, then we had a huge red carpet at the only theater in Dunkirk, were the mayor and the President of the region were present. It was big! We had the added challenge of accommodating all the Harry Styles' fans coming from all over France just to see him on the red carpet."

Like a lot of these campaigns, the effort required is enormous, but the rewards are just as big, and when you've worked on as many successful campaigns as Maréchal has, you start to earn a reputation of excellence.

Queen of the hill

Maréchal has worked incredibly hard to get to where she is today, but when we asked her about what it feels like to be working at such a high level of the entertainment industry, she stressed just how much she's been able to learn from her own experiences and other pros along the way.

"I feel really grateful because throughout my career I've had so many great opportunities and have worked with so many awesome people who have taught me a lot of what I know today. They helped me become a well-known expert in film and series public relations."

It's a very different world compared to a film set, but public relations specialists like Maréchal are extremely important to the overall success of a film or show, and as Maréchal's accounts have proven, this work can be just as exciting.
